Qualcomm bets on energy efficiency (30% less consumption)

Qualcomm apuesta por la eficiencia energetica en el Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1

If you compare the features of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 with those of this upgraded version, you will find very few major differences. It is another chipset manufactured with a 4-nanometer process, although, for this new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the technology and experience of TSMC has been relied on.

Let us remember that, since its launch, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 has had overheating problems, which was apparently due to the fact that the 4-nanometer technology used by Samsung (in charge of manufacturing this SoC) was not as efficient. This led Qualcomm to make the decision to entrust the production of the improved version of said processor to the Taiwanese company.

Now, although the architecture of the CPU remains the same as that of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, it is important to note that this new chipset comes with more powerful cores . This is because its main core is a Cortex-X2 at 3.2 GHz which is accompanied by three Cortex A710-type cores at 2.8 GHz and four Cortex A510 at 2.0 GHz.

These changes to the central processing unit allow the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 to offer 10% faster clock speeds compared to its predecessor. In addition, thanks to this and its modern manufacturing technology, it has the ability to reduce energy consumption by 30% .

Another important improvement is found in its artificial intelligence engine . The 7th generation AI Engine that comes in this chipset offers 10% more performance . This optimizes photo processing and intuitive experiences. Finally, the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 takes a leap in connectivity by being compatible with Bluetooth 5.3 technology.

Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 Benchmarks… How Powerful Is It?

AnTuTu del Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1

The guys from XDA Developers had the honor of testing the first device to mount the Snapdragon 8+ Plus Gen 1. It is an ASUS-branded engineering terminal called SM8475 . This is not a mass-produced mobile, but rather a device created for performance testing .

Well, with the ASUS SM8475 in their hands, the team did not hesitate to put the latest processor to the test. This is how they used the benchmarks par excellence to evaluate each section related to the performance of the chipset . AnTuTu was benchmarked for holistic evaluation, Geekbench for CPU testing, GFXBench for GPU testing, and Burnout Benchmark for power efficiency testing. What was the results? So the following:

  • AnTuTu: It surpassed the scores of the most powerful phones that come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (such as the RedMagic 7) by achieving a historical rating of 1118585 points.
  • Geekbench: Although the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was criticized for not offering a substantial improvement in this section compared to the SD 888, in this case a jump in performance could be seen. Both individually and in a group, the cores of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 run faster than those of any other SoC.
  • GFXBench: Qualcomm did not reveal details about the changes it made to the GPU of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. And although it theoretically has the same as its predecessor (Adreno 730), it was shown to offer a 10% performance improvement becoming the SoC with the best graphics processing unit to date.
  • Burnout Benchmark: When the SD 8 Gen 1 was subjected to a maximum performance level in the RedMagic 7, it exhibited a consumption of up to 21.88 W. On the other hand, in the same conditions the new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 registered a consumption of only 17.91 W. This represents an 18% improvement in energy efficiency.

Everyone wants to be the first to see the new Qualcomm processor . In fact, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra is expected to arrive with this chipset and that the mobile gamers par excellence such as the Black Shark 5 and RedMagic 7 will be relaunched in a new version that integrates the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

However, it seems that Realme will be the one to have the honor of debuting this SoC. Through its Weibo account, the manufacturer announced that its next flagship called Realme GT 2 Master Explorer Edition will come with the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. At the moment, the launch date of this mobile has not been revealed and neither has confirmed if it will be the first to carry this processor.

And you… What do you think of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1?
